If you’re ready to be a pet parent, the first step is finding a furry (or scaly or feathery) friend that fits your personality and lifestyle.

Are we thinking hiking companion or snuggle buddy? A pet who needs constant attention or a low maintenance one who pretty much takes care of itself? A big happy welcome when you come home or some quiet company?

Since pets are for keeps, it’s important to pick the right one for you.

The Quiz

Take this short, free quiz to find out which pet matches your personality best.

Who Is This Quiz For?

This quiz is for anyone who’s ever dreamed of having a pet but isn’t sure which one fits their vibe. Whether you’re an adventure-seeker looking for a loyal buddy or a chill homebody who just wants low-key company, this quiz will help you figure out whether you should get a fluffy friend or a scaly sidekick.

Why Personality Matters While Choosing a Pet

The right pet should match your personality, energy, lifestyle, and quirks. Here’s why it matters:

  • Better compatibility: A pet that aligns with your lifestyle and energy level will fit more seamlessly into your life.
  • Less frustration: If your pet’s personality clashes with yours, it can lead to frustration for both of you. If your pet is a good match for you, caring for it won’t feel like work. You don’t want a pet whose needs are not within your capabilities.
  • Improved well-being: The right pet can boost your mood, reduce your stress levels, and provide emotional support in the way that you need.
  • Stronger bond: If your personalities click, you can form a stronger bond. If you’re an introvert, you might prefer an independent pet that gives you space; whereas if you’re an extrovert, you may thrive with a more social, interactive animal.
  • Stronger purpose: Research shows us that having a pet gives us a greater sense of purpose and meaning in life.

It’s important to choose a pet that suits your personality because it will be your partner for the rest of its life and, hopefully, a long portion of yours, says Eric Gee, a life coach who specializes in personality-based life coaching. “Would you choose a romantic partner that didn’t fit your personality?” asks Gee.

Choosing the Right Pet

If you’re trying to find the best pet for you, here are some factors to consider:

  • Your daily routine: Are you always out and about, or do you love staying home? Some pets need attention and daily exercise, while others are happy doing their own thing.
  • Your energy level: Think about how active you are. Do you prefer lazy weekends or a packed schedule? Your pet should match your pace, not wear you out or leave you bored.
  • Your social capacity: If you love constant company, you’ll want a pet that’s interactive. If you’re more independent or introverted, a more low-key animal might suit you better.
  • Your commitment level: Some pets are a years-long commitment, while others have shorter lifespans. It’s important that you know exactly what you’re getting into.
  • Your home: Your home should be able to comfortably accommodate your future companion.
  • Your responsibilities: It’s easy to fall for a cute face, but every pet comes with responsibilities, in terms of time, energy, and money. Make sure you have enough bandwidth to cope with them.
