The María’s an American Indie band that combines illustrations of both Spanish and English in many of their songs lead by vocalist Maria Zardoya sings about the longing for a connection that isn’t near or good for her, but one that she is familiar with and is sure that particular person is the only one that notices her.
The song begins with Zardoya stating “Maybe I. Lost my mind. No one noticed” she later follows this up with “No one tried to read my eyes. No one but you” suggesting that when Zardoya is in a state of distress she might not ask for help, receive it, or even look as if she needs it. However, there is a particular person who can recognize when she might be facing difficulties and not only do they know what to look out for–they are genuinely interested in how she is doing.
The song is sung from the perspective of a long distance relationship. Zardoya states in the chorus:
“Maybe I (I’d kinda like it if you’d call me) It’s not right (‘Cause I’m so over bein’ lonely) Make you mine (I need a virtual connection) Take our time (Be my video obsession).”
She is longing for that connection with that particular person and wishes they would call her, however she is hesitant in contacting this person–but desperately wants to be with them even if it’s a quick call.
Feeling loneliness overbearing, she suggests that she can just come to them, even if it’s just for a brief moment, even if it’s just for one more hug. Anything to keep what little connection is left, because to her this particular connection is the only one that makes her feel seen. She sings:
Come on, don’t leave me, it can’t be that easy, babe If you believe me, I guess I’ll get on a plane. Fly to your city, excited to see your face. Hold me, console me, and then I’ll leave without a trace.
The song wraps up in Spanish where Zardoya beautifully details how intense their connection is but also how she deserves the same level of emotional intensity without the hurt and harmfulness this relationship brings.
Estás tan dentro de mí Te sigo pensando Te sigo esperando Y estás, oh Tan lejos de mí, oh Te sigo pensando Me canso llorando.
Translation: You live inside of me, like you live inside of every cell. You’re like vibrating through my body. You are living inside me because of how intense this connection is. I keep waiting for you to change, I keep waiting for me to change, I keep waiting for something that might not ever happen. Like I’m tired of crying, ‘cause I’m over it! At this point, I’m just over it.
