There’s a popular TV show called, “Say Yes to the Dress.” It’s focused on a bride and her journey to find the ultimate bridal look and create an unforgettable wedding experience.
This is not what I’m referring to.
I don’t think there’s anyone – except for a rare few – who haven’t been affected by COVID-19 and the changes this virus has brought about in our everyday routines. COVID-19 has changed our lives, right, wrong, or indifferent. The presence of COVID-19 requires that you think twice about routines that used to be par for the course. Where previously you may have greeted one another with a hug or a handshake there is now a veil of caution. Nothing, – very little – is as it used to be. Even though we’re all learning to navigate changing times, we continue to hear that it is no longer acceptable to do things as we used to do, maybe not even safe. But that doesn’t mean you are void of choices. That doesn’t mean that COVID-19 has to wreak havoc on all aspects of our lives.
“Saying yes to the dress” is synonymous with giving yourself approval to enjoy those things that are meaningful to you, in light of the limitations that may exist. As reality would have it, we’re cautioned about getting a mani/pedi, massage, facial, going to the hair salon or mall. Even going to the dentist for a quick zap of teeth whitening gets the finger wag.
Being unable to physically network and engage in everyday activities that recharge and energize doesn’t scream “I’m doing something enjoyable and meaningful.” And if you’re in one of those high-risk groups like me, or you choose not to partake in what has been classified as risky activities, what remains? What choices do you have?
You can throw on a pair of comfy yoga pants or leggings, a big fluffy sweatshirt or t-shirt, throw your hair in a pony and settle in for the hibernation. That does work for a while. Trust me, I have my hibernation kit on stand-by, and sometimes there’s nothing more enjoyable than bringing it out. Or you can grab your favorite OPI nail polish (or whatever is your fave), polish your own nails (don’t neglect the toes), preview a few YouTube tutorials around make-up application, hair styling, facials, etc., and throw yourself the kind of girl-party that would make a group of teen girls jealous.
When you do head out for a quick trip to whatever establishment is calling your name, wear your stilettos! Ditch the baseball cap! Grab your “good clothes,” glam it up, and Say Yes to the Dress!
Take that COVID-19!
